Private Bateman Goes To War by David New
One mans observations about his service in the “Army
of the West” serving under Colonel Sterling Price. E. B. Bateman
enlisted in April 1848 at St. Louis for the term of one year or the
duration of the war.
The story is a short one of one volunteer from
Illinois joining the army in 1847. His story is told it in just 22
letters which include Dr. Bateman’s on going journey to the
California Gold Fields in the spring of 1849.
