Panama Forwarders
image Entire from a Whaler, docketed as having been dated September 25, 1841 from "D. Sherman," black Forwarded By Wm. Nelson Panama oval handstamp, entered the mails for New Bedford, Massachusetts with red "New York Ship Feb 8" postmark and manuscript "20¾" rate (18¾ postage plus 2c ship fee), no contents but this entire undoubtedly originated from a sailor on a whaling voyage in the Pacific Ocean, possibly near Hawaii, a nearly identical letter was sold in DeVoss "Via Panama" auction by Sotheby's in 1978 (lot #2099, sold for $280) that has the same forwarding handstamp and entered the mails on the same date in New York, that lot contained a letter dated from Peru on October 7, minor edge wear, very fine strike and usage #F8 ... $200
