of Steve Walske Background: The Franco-Prussian War culminated in the siege of
Paris from September 18, 1870 until January 28, 1871. Maintaining postal
communications from unoccupied France to besieged Paris was difficult.
Balloons could not be steered to land within the Parisian siege lines, and
messages by pigeongrams were too limited in size. |
