Antigua Stamps And Covers, 1858 - 1890

This web site is dedicated to the stamps and covers of Antigua from 1858, when stamps of Great Britain where sent to the island to be used for postage, through the period when Antigua had their own postage stamps, until October 31, 1890 when when the individual issues for Antigua were withdrawn. The stamps of Antigua were replaced by a general issue for use in all of the Leeward Islands.

This site is organized by periods. The first period, 1858 - 1871, includes Great Britain Used in Antigua as well as the stamps produced and printed by Perkins, Bacon & Company on unwatermarked paper and paper watermarked with a star. The second period, 1872 - 1881, covers the stamps produced by De La Rue & Company on paper with a Crown CC watermark. The third period, 1882 - 1890, covers the stamps produced by De La Rue & Company on paper with a Crown CA watermark. Each period has a general introduction page and links to detailed information on the specific issues. These detail pages may be accessed by using the navigation bar at left of each page.

An overview of the issues covered within each period is shown in tabular form below. The stamps produced specifically for use in Antigua were of only two basic designs. The "Jeens Head" design used for all one penny and six pence stamps and the "Victoria Key Plate" design used for the half penny, 2 ½ penny, four pence and one shilling stamps.

Constant plate varieties of the one penny and six pence stamp that are common to all printings of a particular design are linked above on main navigation bar. The few fakes and forgeries that exist are also treated on a single page linked above.
