Second Period Issues, 1886 - 1898

In 1886 a native-made paper replaced the European wove paper of the previous issue for the new printings of all three denominations. The paper was manufactured from the inner bark of an evergreen native to the mountain regions of Nepal. It is extremely tough and strands of fiber may be seen on individual stamps when held to the light.

The early printings (1886-1889) of all three denominations were on thin to medium paper and are mostly very clear impressions. The later printings (1889-1898) were on medium to thick paper and impressions were only fair to slightly blurred. These gradual changes are not significant enough to warrant separate listings. In 1898 pin-perforated stamps were issued and were apparently available upon request.
